Meet Makayla.

Makayla

Makayla scares me because she is carrying some deep hurt. I wish I could tell her how to just cut mean and hurtful people out of your life totally, like I do, so they can’t hurt you anymore.

I’m not even sure how Makayla does the wilderness hikes, campouts and challenges we have to do. She barely eats. How does she have enough strength to hike and climb?

There’s this other thing about her. She sometimes stares right at you for a minute. Then you say something to her and she snaps out of it. Like she’s been far away in her mind.

I wonder if something bad happened to her and she’s having, like, small mini-breaks from reality. I hope nothing really terrible happened to her. She’s sweet and didn’t deserve it.

Truthfully, I think she got herself arrested and sent to juvie to get away from her parents. For wealthy, successful doctors who supposedly do a lot of good for their patients, they sure sound like terrible parents.
