Swallow

I found Dhani just staring at a small group of swallows above Lost Lake. I never paid attention to them before but—they’re amazing.

They soar and dive and swoop and just about do cartwheels in the air. 

Later, I read that it’s considered good luck if a swallow builds a nest in your barn or under the eaves of your house. And an ancient myth says swallows gave fire to humans. 

I just thought they were so beautiful. 

While we were watching them, I said to Dhani, “It must be a lot of fun to be able to fly like that.” 

He said, “It was.”

I warned him that he has to stop saying things like that to people. They already think he’s half crazy. 

If we can come back after we die, I think I’d come back as a swallow. After this really, really tough life, it would be great to finally be so carefree.
